La Paz, 14 de julio (RCM).- Las crisis como la pandemia o la inflación han enviado desde 2020 a unos 165 millones de personas a las filas de la pobreza, según divulgó este jueves (la ONU, que insta a una «pausa» en los reembolsos de la deuda de los países en desarrollo para invertir la tendencia.
«Los países que han podido invertir en medidas de protección en los últimos años impidieron que muchas personas cayeran en la pobreza (…) en los países muy endeudados, hay una correlación entre altos niveles de deuda, gastos sociales insuficientes y un aumento alarmante de las tasas de pobreza», manifestó el directivo de PNUD, Achim Steiner, en un comunicado.
El impacto acumulado de estas crisis llevó a 75 millones de personas a caer en la extrema pobreza (menos de 2,15 dólares por día) entre 2020 y fines de 2023 y a otros 90 millones bajo el umbral de la pobreza, con 3,65 dólares al día, según proyecciones del Programa de Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD).
